LEDA and the SWAN: in Pompei a “unique and exceptional fresco”
A fresco of the highest quality re-emerges from the excavations of Pompeii: the union of Leda, the beautiful queen wife of Tindaro, King of Sparta, and Zeus, transformed into a swan.
As the director of the Archaeological Park Massimo Osanna explained, it’s a discovery of particular importance for the invoice of the portrait of Leda, which is extremely particular and “different from all the others until now found in other houses”. The reference to the Greek myth of Leda and the Swan “is rather widespread”, but never was found “with this decidedly sensual iconography.
